Cranial-Sacral Therapy (CST) and Somato-Emotional Release (SER)
CranioSacral Therapy (CST) is a gentle, hands-on, whole-body method of releasing restrictions around the brain and spinal cord to enhance central nervous system performance and allow the body to self-correct. It strengthens the body’s natural healing processes to bolster resistance to disease and improve overall health. CST has also proven effective in aiding individuals with a wide range of medical challenges associated with pain and dysfunction. Because of its gentle nature and positive effect on so many body functions, CranioSacral Therapy is practiced by a variety of healthcare professionals, from physicians to massage therapists in countries all over the world.
Cranial-Sacral Therapy
How a session is performed.
A CranioSacral Therapy session usually takes place in a quiet, private setting. We recommend that clients wear loose, comfortable clothing. Clients remain fully clothed, though most choose to remove their shoes. The session is performed with the client reclining on a massage or treatment table while the practitioner stands or sits, positioned at various times throughout the session at the client's head, middle torso or feet.
Somato-Emotional Release
A therapeutic process that uses and expands on the principles of CranioSacral Therapy to help rid the mind and body of the residual effects of trauma. You remain completely clothed and relaxed on a full body-cushioned supported massage table as we work together using CST and with dialogue.
A truly holistic approach
Joint research efforts by Dr. John Upledger and biophysicist Dr. Zvi Karni led to the discovery that the body often retains (rather than dissipates) physical forces. This is often the result of an accident, injury, or emotional trauma. The dysfunctional area is isolated, creating what is called an “energy cyst”. Although a reasonably healthy body can adapt to “energy cysts,” extra energy is required to perform normal bodily functions. As time passes, the adaptive pattern of the body loses its effectiveness. Symptoms begin to appear and, over time, become more difficult to suppress. As time passes we may lose all or some access to releasing the "energy cysts". With CST and SER, release of the tissue is inherent in the process and you experience this release through the adaptation of a more harmonious physiology and a reordering with greater integration of your body, mind, emotions, and life force. Pain relief, heat sensations, gurgling sounds, and other sensations are a result of releases taking place in the tissue. Sometimes one session is all you need and other times one session builds upon another until you are fully released into a state of holistic health.Lynne March, a practitioner of CST-SER, works with you to affect changes in the tissue through dialogue when appropriate. Pain relief and emotional recovery can occur wit:
- Assess and mobilize the "Avenue of Expression" working through more than 10 different body components, including the Shoulder area front and back, jaw, mouth, and throat areas using CST and SER techniques.
- Locate and release Energy Cysts. (see below for an explanation of energy cysts)
- Release suppressed emotions that may be inhibiting complete structural releases.
- Use refined listening and comprehension skills to facilitate a complete release in the body/mind.
- Use complete palpation and whole-body evaluation skills during the session.
What you may experience during a session.
Experiences during a CST session are as individual as the clients and practitioners themselves. They also may differ from session to session. At times, a client may deeply relax or even fall asleep; at other times, he or she may talk a great deal, recalling hidden memories or expressing emotions. Some will remain still during the entire session, hardly noticing the practitioner's evaluation and treatment, while others will experience sensations within the body as the evaluation process is carried out.
At various times throughout the session, the practitioner will support a client's limbs and spine while facilitating release of accumulated tension. This process is called energy cyst release or tissue release. During this release, the client might recall circumstances surrounding a past shock, trauma or injury. Releasing and re-experiencing past hurts assists the body in reversing dysfunction and restoring the previous level of mobility. This entire process has been named SomatoEmotional Release®.
What you may experience following a session.
Just as individuals experience CST sessions differently, the immediate results can be diverse as well. This relaxed state may cause some to sleep for many hours after a session. Others may experience an increase in energy. Reduction of pain or an increase in function may occur immediately after the session, or it may develop gradually over the next few days. Since CST helps the body resume its natural healing processes, it isn't unusual for improvement to continue weeks after the session. For some there may be a reorganization phase as the body adapts to the release of previously held patterns.
